The process begins with threshing, the breaking that separates the grain from the straw and the chaff. The chaff is the covering. It once protected the grain, but now it conceals more than it preserves and holds no sustaining value. Then comes the winnowing. What has broken and separated is lifted and thrown into the air. Here, the wind is invited into the process and does its work. The chaff is carried away, while the grain falls back to the floor.
